The genome of Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides SC (MmymySC) has been sequenced with funding from the SSF Genome program in an attempt to facilitate studies regarding the organism's cell function and the disease it causes. MmymySC is the etiological agent of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), a highly contagious respiratory disease in cattle and buffalo. CBPP is widespread in central Africa where the disease is of great concern in endemic regions. Since 1980, there have been outbreaks also in Southern Europe. CBPP is, from a global point of view, one of the most serious diseases in animals. It is the only bacterial disease included in the A-list of communicable animal diseases of Office International des Epizooties (OIE), the World organization for animal health. MmymySC has a circular genome of 1,211,703 bp and the G+C content is 24%. The genome of MmymySC contains a large number of long repetitive sequences (1). The complete sequence of the assembled genome has recently been generated (2) and 985 putative genes have been found. The complete sequence will contribute to a more detailed analysis of the genome evolution of the mycoplasmas from the Bacillus-Lactobacillus-Streptococcus branch, and increase the comprehension of small genome evolution in general.
