Our research deals with protein function and protein-protein interactions during secondary cell wall biosynthesis in trees. Using techniques of plant molecular biology, we are functionally characterizing proteins that are upregulated during secondary cell wall formation in the poplar xylem. Our efforts include establishment and transformation of P. trichocarpa Nisqually-1 cell cultures, as well as establishment of a platform for heterologous expression of poplar xylem proteins. We also study subcellular localization and protein co-localization by in vivo GFP imaging, as well as protein-protein interactions and protein phosphorylation.
