The Division of Glycoscience, School of Biotechnology, KTH

The Division of Glycoscience is directed by Professor Vincent Bulone. Our research is focused in various areas of Glycobiology, comprising fundamental research on plants and microorganisms, as well as biotechnological developments towards carbohydrate-based products. A major goal is to understand how extracellular polysaccharides in microorganisms and plants - especially trees - are formed, remodeled and hydrolyzed. This fundamental knowledge on cell wall polysaccharide metabolism and self-assembly is exploited to develop applications relevant to a wide range of industries. Our research requires multidisciplinary approaches that are fully integrated in the Division in the form of interconnected activities in the following areas: Bioenergy, Biomaterials, Biorefinery, Food Sustainability and Disease Control.

Our activities are illustrated in the following movie and outreach webpages, as well as through the links on the left side of this page: movie;outreach webpage in Swedish; outreach webpage in English.

Research Centers

The Division currently has core activities in three research centers at KTH:

In addition, Professor Vincent Bulone is a Partner Investigator in the Australian Research Centre of Excellence in Plant Cell Wall Biology.

The Division is also active in a number of European Union and National research projects, the details of which can be found on the pages of the individual Principal Investigators.
