Several automated systems for sample handling has been developed (1,2). The sample preparation is based on an “in-house” designed robotic work station allowing magnetic separation and temperature-based hybridization/annealing. These systems have been used for applications involving sequencing (1,2,3), cell capture (4,5) and microbial/viral diagnostics (6,7). Recently, a method to regenerate the biotin-streptavidin interaction has been developed to allow re-use of streptavidin magnetic beads at least six times without loss of capacity or yield (6). Thus, cost-effective, high-throughput schemes for genomics and proteomics can be envisioned, including solid phase cloning, sequencing clean-up and sample preparation for cDNA arrays for transcript profiling. A commercial instrument (Magnatrix1200) based on the “in-house” designed robot has recently been developed in collaboration with two companies (Japan and Sweden).
