Design biomaterials for the future

Are you interested to learn more about innovative biomaterial design? Then, this should interest you!

we offer a unique course program for PhD students

Our mission is to train PhD students in the theory of innovative biomaterial design based on natural and environmentally friendly plant fibers. Our course program is a stand-alone theoretical build-on module of PhD courses that provide unique expertise on plant fibers and their potential use for creating new environmentally friendly biomaterials. Look at video interviews with students and teachers to learn more.

The program starts in September 2011.

profile of students

You do not have to be a PhD student in the plant or biomaterials field to take this program. Due to the program's cross-disciplinary character, any background in the natural sciences would allow you to follow and benefit from the program. We are reaching out to students who are genuinely curious and wish to add complementary expertise in a new field of science. We believe it is at the interface of blending disciplines that innovative ideas are born.

take our courses online

Pursuing a PhD often means an overwhelming work load. Working in the lab, reading papers, giving seminars, attending conferences, writing papers, and finally of course, writing the thesis. And on top of that, getting the required course credits to graduate.

Our research school has a highly flexible implementation enabling PhD students to follow the program online at their own pace. This course module is a perfect complement to your PhD program’s course requirements. Note that we do not offer PhD positions, nor do we fund individual PhD projects.

Do you hold a degree in natural sciences, and is currently enrolled in a PhD program? Let us know as soon as possible if this interests you. Please click on "application" here or in the menu and follow the instructions.

what's it all about?

Biomimetics is a field focusing on the design of systems, materials as well as their functionality to mimic biological systems. By learning from nature, we can improve biocompatibility and engineer materials to obtain a variety of altered new properties for increased functionality. Biomaterial design using plant fibers and polysaccharides is an emerging new field in medical biotechnology and material sciences. The use of engineered polysaccharide-based materials range from scaffolds for tissue engineering and regeneration to novel materials for furniture and electronic devices.

our aim

Our aim is to provide and foster new interdisciplinary skills in biotechnological engineering and advanced materials technology. We think along the lines of sustainable development through safe, high-performance biomaterials and cutting-edge innovative material design.
